A 1940s event with a cast of thousands - literally! Joining re-enactors in and around the 1940s zone at Runway Visitor Park is a supporting cast of vintage vehicles and aircraft.
The Festival, which is expected to attract over 15,000 visitors across the weekend, is commemorating a number of anniversaries at this famous aerodrome. The first flight of the Lancaster Bomber took place 75 years ago from Ringway Airport. An exhibition called 'The Golden Years' will celebrate the airport's first 30 years, from 1938, which witnessed a wartime aerodrome, with paratroopers and Spitfires, change into a busy commercial aerodrome, with piston engine aircraft connecting Manchester to the world.
The 1940s zone is now an integral part of the Festival, featuring the Spitfire Display Team, vintage military vehicles, an army camp, NAAFI tent, and a Battle of Britain memorial flight taking place. Jane is back once more by popular demand, providing the live entertainment on both days.
1940s period re-enactors, who must register in advance and wear 1940s period clothes on the day, are offered free entry all weekend (parking is also free for all visitors). Normal entry fee is £5 per person (under-3s free). To register, contact: firstname.lastname@example.org
There is plenty more going at Runway over the weekend. The Concorde Hangar will be turned into a massive transport memorabilia and craft fair. Concorde itself, and other exhibits in the Park, will be open for viewing throughout the weekend. Over 500 classic cars, a parade of traction engines, hot air balloons, and over 700 aircraft landing and taking off at close quarters can be seen - including several visits by the world's largest aircraft, the Airbus A380. A flypast by a vintage 1940s Dakota will help bring back memories of the airport in its golden age. Flight simulators, fire engines, a beer tent and BBQ, childrens rides and great music all come together to make a fantastic family day out at a very unique venue!
