Ringway in Wartime

Now in its seventh year, the Manchester Airport Aviation & Transport Festival is a well established event, attracting many thousands of visitors. The theme of this year's event is 'Ringway in Wartime', commemorating the vital role the airfield played throughout World War Two. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will be undertaking flying displays on both days, while an original NAAFI tent will house a fascinating exhibition of photographs and memorabilia, with live entertainment all weekend from Lancashire Belle.

On the lawn outside, a Spitfire will take pride of place. In addition to all this, hundreds of period cars and re-enactors will help recreate the scenes of Ringway in Wartime. Re-enactors wearing appropriate period dress will be admitted to the event free of charge; plus there is free parking on site all weekend. Elsewhere on the Festival Park, over 500 classic cars will be in attendance, a giant memorabilia and craft fare will take place inside the Concorde hangar (literally under the wings of Concorde!), a bar and catering is available, plus a commentary by Air Traffic Controllers of the 700 aircraft movements each day!

Ringway has a long and illustrious history, hosting No.1 Parachute Regiment formed on the instructions of Churchill in 1940, while over 4,000 aircraft were built on the site, including the very first Lancaster Bomber. It is a spectacular event, one not to be missed - and another reminder that appropriately dressed re-enactors are admitted free of charge, with all parking on site free.
